Together with Mark Twain and W. D. Howells, Stephen Crane belongs to the founders of American
realism and naturalism at the end of the nineteenth century. Crane’s principal masterpieces are
the short story The Open Boat and the two short novels Maggie, a Girl of the Streets: A Story
of New York and The Red Badge of Courage. His free verse poetry, inspired by the works
of Emily Dickinson, paved the way for twentieth-century century American poets.
