Anotace:
In response to the intention of the expert panel of the Czech Ministry of Education
to abolish the compulsory teaching of an additional foreign language in primary schools and
in the lower grades of the secondary schools and convert it to an elective as part of the revisions
to the Framework Curriculum for Primary Education, this text provides arguments that
refute the legitimacy of the decision in question. Partially, statements of the representatives
of the expert panel are subjected to a more detailed analysis, referring also to available
documents of a political nature and to research studies of the ČŠI or the State Pedagogical
Institute in Bratislava. Finally, proposals for measures that the MoEYS should implement
in view of the current situation in foreign language teaching are briefly presented.
