Anotace:
Chateaubriand, a child of French Enlightenment, together with German and English authors,
infl uenced the spreading of French Romanticism in Bohemia. The main reason for the reception
of Chateaubriand in Czech literature is the excellent translation of Atala done by Josef Jungmann
in 1805, four years after the publication in French. The linguistic quality of the translation
had a major infl uence on the renaissance of the Czech language in the 19th century. The effect
of the book was amplifi ed by two Chateuabriand´s visits to Bohemia (to see the dethroned
French king Charles X) as well as by his work inspired by this journey in a broader context on
Napoleonian wars – Mémoires d‘outre-tombe. Chateaubriand thus “discovered America” for the
Czech public and in the context of the newly born interest in the “New world” he became the
inspirer of patriotic and religious ideas of that time.
