Anotace:
Thearticle deals with thetreatment ofcultural topics inlanguage classes, specifically
focusing onGerman. After abrief theoretical introduction where Imainly concentrate
ontheterminological diculties, theCzech secondary school leaving exam (maturita)
is discussed, especially with respect to the oral part aswell as the individual topics,
the choice ofwhich is ateach school’s discretion. Thisprobe reveals that theoverwhelming
majority of Czech schools still continue to feature areas, which require
students tomemorize facts about history, geography, literature etc. instead oftesting
their communicative and/or intercultural competences. Following on from this,
Iargue that thiswidespread practice should be abolished foramultitude ofreasons,
including forexample objectivity, validity, relevance, and thefact that itruns counter
totheeducational goals asstipulated byvarious curricular documents.
