Anotace: The aim of this paper is a retrospective investigation of crucial

developmental changes of the academic training for fine artists from the
19th century to a contemporary state. Description of the transformative
situation is based upon key approaches: Nicolas Pevsner’s historical
survey, M. H. Abrams’ literary theory of romanticism and Pierre
Bourdieu’s sociology of art. With this theoretical background the present
study rethinks the Academy of art in the light of two key turbulences
in the institution’s history: (1) 19th century industrialisation and
democratisation of the art world, (2) Bauhaus and Black Mountain
College’s modern revolution in art education. In conclusion it is suggested
to resolve the paradoxical state of modern and contemporary academy
with the approach of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of art.
