The linguistic situation and teaching of French in Cape Verdean schools
The article describes and analyses the linguistic situation and teaching of French
in Cape Verdean schools. The Creole is the mother tongue of practically entire
Cape Verdean population and the language is used in all informal oral and written
communication. All Cape Verdeans start learning French and English in the fifth year
of primary school and French has an important position in Cape Verde for geopolitical,
economic and social reasons.
