Anotace:
Empirical research of grammatical and lexical competences in German with secondary school
graduates has shown that the insufficient development of these competences may be the reason
why students cannot master requirements of the technical language curriculum at university.
Our research has also brought other important findings. For example, there is a little difference
between grammatical and lexical competences of learners with and without secondary schoolleaving
German exam. Furthermore, there is no clear correlation between the achieved grammatical
and lexical competences and the duration of German language learning. Many students
do not pursue extracurricular learning and a large part of them blame aspects of secondary
school curriculum for their shortcomings in German.
