The article outlines the life and discusses the writings of the distinguished nineteenth-
century American writer Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888). The paper focuses
on her most famous novel Little Women (1868) in the context of her extensive
oeuvre including several other genres, e.g. sensational novels, stories for children,
and satires. An extract from the novel and its Czech translation and adaptation and
selected bibliography conclude the article.
