Although the null form is considered the most definite of the English articles, thus
placing it at the opposite end of the scale to the zero article, sucient counterevidence
exists to suggest that this description is not always valid. The current paper oers
examples from contemporary non-fictional texts of both British and American
origin in which the null form apparently shares common features with the weak
definite article, while in other cases insertion of either the definite or indefinite
articles in place of null would still produce a grammatically correct sentence without
any change in meaning
