Anotace:
Whether it is necessary or not to translate in a foreign language classroom has
always raised many questions and nurtured a debate. Whereas, according to some, translation
should be used to reinforce learners’ language skills, many others strongly oppose it for several
reasons. In this article, after a short overview of the place of translation in various teaching
methods, particular attention will be paid to the notion of mediation included in the Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages. Then diff erences between pedagogical and
professional translation will be explored and emphasis will be put on what to teach, why and
how. The aim of this article is not to provide a unanimous solution to the long-debated question
of translating or not but to show that if it is well integrated into the learning process, translation
as part of the concept of mediation can be a useful activity for language learners.
